Training Methodology

Training at DOT largely conforms to a blend of conventional and non-conventional techniques which include class-room lectures, role play/presentations, tutorial / syndicate meetings, assignments, extension lectures, group discussions, case study, hand-outs, house tests and spot tests etc.

A.   Class-Room Lectures

Learning process is a combination of reception, assimilation and recollection of material provided for learning.

Expertise of best professionals including the faculty is utilized to impart lectures on subjects such as Income Tax, Sales Tax, Federal Excise, Accountancy and Other Acts & Service Rules. Utmost care is taken to make the lectures participative. Feedback of the participants is taken on constant basis and is used for future reference and improvement.

B.   Role Play / Presentations

Probationary officers are required to prepare and deliver presentations on pre-assigned topics which are evaluated.

C.    Syndicate Meetings

Probationers are divided into (tutorial) groups with a faculty member as Syndicate in-charge. Main purpose of this activity is to encourage out of box, independent and creative thinking and to improve the decision making skills of probationary officers.

D.   Group Discussion

This method based upon non-directive approach, strives to foster free discussion and uninhibited self expression. A small face-to-face group typically comprising of 3 to 5 members is more conducive to learning. Moreover, the group members are helped by group leader for more fruitful participation through mutual exchange of views/reviews in a purely intellectual and professional environment.

E.    Extension Lectures

Extension lectures are delivered by renowned scholars and economists. Main purpose of the lectures is to provide the probationers with a reasonably wide spectrum of expert views on a variety of subjects including human relations with reference to administration and revenue collection.

F.    Study Tour and Field Trips

Field trips and study tours are an important part of training with the aim to enable the trainees to correlate theory with practice. During study tour and field trips the trainees visit different offices and industrial units where they get opportunity to learn about the particular trade. They are also required to submit a report after each visit.

G.   In House Exams

In house exams are conducted to assess and evaluate progress of each trainee and to design a programme for each trainee in accordance with his strength or weakness.
